Upvc & plastic double glazing:

Customers often think that Upvc doors and windows are a fit and forget product unlike wooden doors which swell and stick. This is far from the case, they need regular maintenance. Upvc doors move a tremendous amount between hot and cold weather and tend to drop on their hinges for starters. Also the mechanisms are not terribly strong so put an ill fitting door with this and problems soon arise.

One thing that you can do is lubricate the lock mechanism at least once a year. Some manufacturers recommend twice a year. We use products like WD40.

Wooden and metal:

One important thing to watch out for is sticking doors and windows. If they are sticking, they need attention! It is not necessarily obvious but continually forcing the door opens up the joints and makes the situation progressively worse, so early intervention is a must.

Oddly enough sticking doors are a source of locking people out. Trust me, It happens!

Generally if a door or window is correctly fitted and decorated in the first place it will never stick and cause damage. Unfortunately, this is often not the case.
